Senior Editor, International

The Senior Editor, International has responsibility for the editorial review, approvals and decisions for all global products for our international business including digital publishing, outbound licensing, and print (magazine and book) partnerships around the world.  This leader drives the strategic product development conversations with global partners who license and use Highlights content for proprietary products within their markets. This role is also responsible for project management of proprietary international development projects and the overall global publishing plan, including the digital and English Language Learning (ELL) product. This role is also responsible for driving content strategy for the Highlights Library platform.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Develop the Highlights’ international product strategy as it relates to outbound partnerships and global reach, including managing the Highlights International Publishing Plan.
  • Oversee the proprietary product development initiatives for internationally licensed projects, including custom editions, ELL projects, and consumer reaching products outside of the US.
  • Understand and suggest curriculum driven uses of Highlights and Zaner-Bloser content for language learn uses globally
  • Establish project outlines and summaries for large-scale editorial initiatives with Highlights global partners.
  • Communicate with internal editorial departments on new content, audio, and puzzle creation requests to support international business.
  • Collaborate across the organization to ensure that all initiatives are properly communicated and in alignment with the company’s overall strategic plans.
  • Collaborate with editors from global publishing partners to ensure high quality products and timely delivery on commitments.
  • Strategically support and further sales initiatives through online learning, app, and mobile platforms.
  • Directly work with our digital international partners and customers in the mobile and e-learning channels for our global app product expansion and content licensing.
  • Directly manage internal international editorial team.
  • Lead and liaise with sales, marketing, project management and production internal teams as appropriate.
  • Manage any local editorial or product freelancers supporting international projects or project development initiatives.
  • Some international travel required 2-4 times a year to attend major tradeshows, present training and editorial driven presentations, and participate in key customer visits, as needed.
  • Further expand the Highlights International global business and establish a creative bar that ensures the Highlights’ standards and missions are properly conceived and executed.


  • Bachelor’s Degree and six or more years of experience in interactive media, magazine, educational publishing, and/or other content-based publishing
  • Copy editing, project management, and navigating global relationships
  • Knowledge of and/or direct involvement in the business of content and/or brand licensing
  • The ability to stay on top of the changes in a fast-moving digital environment and the ability to envision and articulate the leveraging of content across interactive platforms
  • An affinity for the Highlights mission and values, and an appreciation for the company’s “Fun with a Purpose” approach to content
  • Strong leadership capabilities that facilitate managing, motivating, and collaborating with a diverse group of colleagues
  • A passion and skill for nurturing and mentoring creative and business talent
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize as well as successfully operate in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent public speaking and written communication
  • An ability to understand international business models and apply them to forging new publishing and/or distribution arrangements globally
  • Knowledge of publishing in an international marketplace, with a focus on English Language Learning (ELL) initiatives is a plus
