Production Editor

As the combined SDE/Stenhouse Publishing group continues to grow its robust professional books, resources, and programs for the K-12 educators, we are seeking a qualified Production Editor to add to a great team!

Position Summary:

The Production Editor works with internal and external editorial functions to lead the process of further developing and refining Stenhouse manuscripts and to facilitate their movement through the production process to meet the agreed completion dates and budgets. The Production Editor is responsible for managing, scheduling and communicating the production process and schedule directly with the author, freelance team and editorial staff involved in the assigned project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • 90% Oversee Production of Manuscripts of Professional Books (8-10/annually):
  • Evaluates initial edits to manuscripts from the Production Assistant and decides additional formatting edits and call-outs, for example, charts, tables, footnotes or appendices.
  • Specifies design codes and notes them to all elements of a manuscript.
  • Evaluates the quality of the manuscript to determine the composition of the freelance team who will be engaged in the project, including copyeditors and proofreaders and, if needed, indexers. Selects and negotiates costs and schedules directly with the contractor to engage services.
  • Adjusts and communicates production schedule changes with authors, freelance team and editors.
  • Oversees and organizes a status calendar for each book, including collaborating with author and internal staff to meet established deadlines. Negotiates priorities with internal and external editorial functions when multiple manuscripts are being worked on simultaneously.
  •  Works with Production Assistant to evaluate needed permissions from third parties in each manuscript, estimates costs and time requirements, and, considering budget and schedule, decides to seek permission or a re-write to avoid permission.  Manages second round of manuscript editing, resolving any outstanding credits, sending out updated materials for author review.
  • Evaluates and then approves or negotiates or otherwise resolves any author changes and prepares files for typesetting.
  • Receives typeset page proofs and distributes materials to proofreaders, indexers, and authors.
  • Reviews all proposed changes and compiles into a master copy and finalizes all corrections including revisions to the table of contents, index, and other elements.
  • Manages relationships with authors and editors and communicates any final edits or changes to manuscript and editorial schedule.
  • Resolves and provides updates on key issues that may arise during the copyediting and proofing stages.
  • 10% In-house copyediting assistance, as requested and assigned.
  • Provides copy editing and proofreading for marketing materials, website, covers on an as needed basis
  • Assists in copy editing catalogs and proofreading with advertisements for the marketing department.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Engages a cadre of copy editors, proofreaders, indexers, and other freelancers.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Publishing, English, Writing or related field.
  • Minimum of 4 – 5 years of editorial production experience required,
  • including editing and project management experience

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent editorial judgment and decision-making skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet schedule deadlines
  • Strong copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Experience with version control of files
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Dropbox, and Google Docs
  • Familiarity with Photoshop and InDesign strongly preferred.
